Furniture Refinishing Preparation
GET READY FOR REFINISHING
Prepare your furniture for refinishing with our comprehensive pre-service checklist. Learn cleaning, repair, and transport guidelines to ensure the best results for your project.
1. Cleaning
Wash your furniture using warm water and a mild dish soap. Dry all surfaces thoroughly with a clean, lintfree cloth.
For dressers and cabinets:
-Remove all drawers.
-Check inside for any personal belongings that may have fallen behind or underneath.
-Vacuum the drawers and the cabinet interior.
2. Pet Hair
Please remove all pet hair from the furniture, including upholstered areas and inside drawers or cabinets.
Pet hair can contaminate our finishing products and affect the quality of the finish.
3. Felt Pads
Remove all old felt pads or furniture glides from the legs before your appointment.
If you would like new felt pads or glides installed after refinishing, please let us know.
4. Hardware
If you plan to update your hardware, please bring the new knobs, pulls, or handles with your furniture.
Existing hardware can also be refinished for an additional charge.
Please ensure all existing hardware is securely fastened so nothing is lost during transportation.
5. Colour Matching
If you would like a custom paint or stain colour matched, please provide a physical colour sample or swatch whenever possible.
If you do not have a physical sample, you may email photos of your desired colour or finish to: info@superiorpaintco.ca
6. Repairs
Please inspect your furniture carefully and make note of any repairs you would like completed.
Common items to check include:
-Dents or scratches
-Loose joints
-Wobbly chairs or tables
-Doors that bind or do not close properly
-Drawers that stick or do not slide smoothly
-Broken, loose, or missing hardware
-Loose veneer or damaged trim
Please point out any concerns during drop-off so they can be included in your estimate.
7. Empty the Furniture
Remove all personal belongings before bringing your furniture to the shop.
Please remove:
-Clothing
-Documents
-Valuables
-Electronics
-Fragile items
Superior Paint Co. is not responsible for items left inside furniture.
8. Service Items Only
Please bring only the pieces or components that are being serviced.
For example:
-If only the tabletop is being refinished, please leave the table base at home.
-If glass components are not being serviced, please leave them at home.
-If upholstery is not part of the work being performed, there is no need to bring upholstered pieces.
-If only doors, drawers, or shelves are being refinished, leave the remaining cabinet components at home unless instructed otherwise.
Bringing only the items being serviced helps reduce handling, protects components from unnecessary transport, and ensures a more efficient appointment.
9. Transport Preparation
To help protect your furniture during transport:
-Wrap delicate pieces with moving blankets.
-Secure doors and drawers with stretch wrap or painter's tape (do not apply packing tape directly to finished surfaces).
-Remove loose shelves whenever possible.
-Always lift furniture—never drag it.
10. Before We Begin
When your furniture arrives, we will complete an intake inspection to document its condition and confirmthe work to be performed.
This allows us to identify:
-Existing damage
-Required repairs
-Missing hardware
-Veneer concerns
-Structural issues
Any additional repairs will be discussed with you before work begins.
11. What to Expect
Every piece of furniture is unique.
Please note:
Natural wood grain and character will remain visible after refinishing.
Previous repairs may still be noticeable depending on their condition.
Paint and stain colours can vary slightly due to differences in wood species, age, and previous finishes.
Hand-applied finishes may include subtle variations that enhance their handcrafted appearance.
12. Appointments
Our workshop is by appointment only.
Please ensure your furniture is prepared before your scheduled drop-off. Arriving with your furniture cleaned and ready for service helps us begin your project on time.
